With over 16,000 Anglican churches in England
200 churches in the diocese of Bristol
23 churches in the City Deanery
and 7 churches in the East Bristol Partnership
it's clear that churches are a ubiquitous presence in our communities.
However most of them stand empty for the better part of the week and only open for a few hours on a Sunday.
These buildings are increasingly becoming a burden for the small worshipping communities which take care of them. Although very beautiful, none of our churches here in east Bristol are listed buildings, and so don't qualify for help from organisations such as English Heritage.
If these buildings are to survive they need to reassume their place at the centre of our communities. They're potentially great spaces with all manner of possible uses - they've got high ceilings, and are solidly built - and there's so reason why they can't function dually as worshipping spaces and community spaces.
